Congratulations to Newcastle United
for a richly deserved victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium last Sunday
from everyone at Remembering the Past
On 16th March the team wrote its name into the history books, but it did so much more than that. As a life-long supporter who was just too young in 1955 to remember winning the last domestic trophy, I watched on at home wishing I was there. The sea of black and white scarves waving in celebration was an awesome sight. The smiles on so many faces and the tears of joy on so many others said it all. During the game, even being many miles away from the action, I could feel the emotion and determination of the players and was moved by the fantastic support from the Black and White Army. The nervy last few minutes were typical, NUFC never make it easy for themselves, but they were not to be denied.
After the final whistle had blown, the ghosts of so many disappointments in the past 70 years had fled and the fleeting moment of, “This must be a dream!” had passed and the celebrations began. As I watched the thousands of supporters I realised, Newcastle United hadn’t just created history, the club had created thousands upon thousands of memories that will stay with its supporters for the rest of their lives. Memories that they can, and no doubt will, share with their children, their grandchildren and their friends. It reminded me of why we do what we do at Remembering the Past, recording people’s stories of their lives and events and preserving them for others to listen to and enjoy in the future. The history books tell the facts, but only the people who were there and were part of it can tell the story of how it felt and what it meant to them. I hope that in the not-too-distant future we can record some of those memories and perhaps even some of the players’ memories.
Looking into our archive we do not seem to have any memories of Newcastle’s last FA Cup victory, which I would have loved to share. Sadly, many of those who were there are no longer around, but there are still many who are. If you remember that day in 1955 or know anyone who does and is willing to share that memory with us, then please get in touch via our Contact Page.
