Thanks to everyone who came along yesterday (virtually) to see our presentation (now on YouTube) about the restoration of Burradon and Weetslade’s colliery banner.

This is one of the best projects we’ve been involved with over the years and we love to tell people about it.  Burradon Forum initiated the work in 2015 because the banner was so badly damaged.   It was restored by a wonderful team of art restorers and fabric conservators, led by Jim Devenport and Caroline Rendell, a new replica was also made.   Some very proud people from Burradon marched the replica in the Durham Miners’ Gala in 2016.

If you follow this link Bringing Back the Banner you’ll be able to see the film that was made of the project and we’ll be putting up a recording of our talk in a couple of days time.  Some of the images of the restoration are stunning.

Here are a few ‘before and after’s’ for you to see.  In case you’re wondering, yes, that is gaffer tape holding it together before the work started and yes, it is the same banner after some TLC! Quite amazing isn’t it.

The project was funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and ran in 2015/2016.
