In 2018, Sunderland City Council received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a Townscape Heritage Scheme in the Bishopwearmouth Conservation Area. The work to be carried out was due for completion in 2024 and involved repairs to historic buildings and streets, improvements to Town Park and activities and events exploring the rich culture of the area. One of these activities involved interviews with people who had grown up in the area and were able to provide first hand accounts of what life was like in the area as far back as the mid 20th Century. These interviews were recorded and Remembering the Past were delighted to be asked to look after these memories in our archive and host the stories within them on our website. Although they relate to a time within living memory, they describe a very different life to that of today. Some of them are quite amusing as well and we think they will bring a smile to your face.
