Sunday School

Now and again they would give us an apple and an orange. At Christmas you got nuts as well. The girls got a rag doll too.

Do you remember the Sunday School on Albion Road?  It was like a Mission.  Us kids started going every week about a month before the Christmas party was due.  They must have known.  But they were all very nice.

We used to learn hymns – we knew them all.  Sometimes we got little picture cards with Bible stories on them, and now and again they would give us an apple and an orange.  We used to hold the bottom of our jumpers out and they would put them in.  At Christmas you got nuts as well.  The girls got a rag doll too.

Some of the kids there were really poor – they had no shoes to their feet, some even wore clogs.

I remember going on a Sunday School trip to Heaton Park.  We were given a bun and milk.  We thought we’d got all the world.  Once there was a clown.  I enjoyed that.  He gave all the kids sweets – bonbons, covered with icing sugar.
