Sledges, 1960

We would have races and snowball fights and all things like this

I watched a young lad on his state of the art sledge the other day and he was definitely going nowhere fast. Now I tried to explain that, by putting some candle wax on the runners and polishing them then redoing it, he would find it would go like the wind. But all I got back was, “The daft old sod. Look, mind your own business”.

Now we were very lucky, for we always had plenty of snow but we also had plenty of banks down by Appleby Street, where I lived. The difference was, we would have races and snowball fights and all things like this but, this lad was on his own just like the Lone Ranger without Tonto.

Our sledges might have just been a glorified bit of wood with bits stuck on but to us, they were the boy racers of the day. Cost nothing but, hours of fun.
