Marching on Good Friday 2

At the end of the march we were all given an orange. We all felt we had done something good.

This was something we looked forward to for weeks. All the lads got new rig outs and the girl’s new dresses. How good we felt.

All the churches congregations assembled outside St John’s Church together with the Boys’ Brigade Band. We always had to wait a while for the tiny congregation from the Christian Meeting House to join us from their tiny building on the side of the Backworth Colliery Line by the cricket field. Then off we would go behind the band and the church banners, up Station road, through the railway bridge, up the side of the Tipping Bank to the Buildings, this was the name the Villagers gave to top Percy Main. We then turned around and marched back to our starting point where we were all given an orange. We all felt we had done something good.
