In 2016 we were involved in a wonderful project exploring Easter traditions. We worked alongside residents in Eccles Court, Backworth to create a booklet of memories which you can read here: Recalling Easter Traditions. The variety of stories was amazing and carlins came into the conversation quite a few times. The gentlemen in the group remembered they used to be put out on the bar at the social club on the Sunday before Palm Sunday (alongside the pickled onions and cheese). The ladies in the group remember being at home cooking the Sunday dinner while the men were out.
We collected some sound recordings from the Eccles Court contributors and we’ve come across one of them that is particularly relevant as we approach Carlin Sunday 2021. Listen as Peggy recites the old fashioned rhyme about the Sundays in Lent.
