Stephen attended a talk we gave and during the question and answer session we got on to a general discussion about mining in the North East.  Stephen shared some of his experiences of working down the pits in the 1960s.  Subsequently he gave us some ephemera relating to his role as a Deputy.  We’ve reproduced it here for you to enjoy, it really brings home how skilled the job of a Deputy was.  It’s fascinating to see how eye-sight and hearing were tested and how important these two senses were to keeping safe.  He was also qualified to give First Aid.

Many thanks Stephen for your memories.
