We saw them go up and we saw them come down!
When I first moved to Longbenton in 1954 the rent was 15/4d a week and there were no street lights.
It was pitch black because, at that time, there were just fields all around us, no other houses or factories. I can always remember when the fifteen storey flats were being built and the foundations were being put in with big pile driving machines.
My daughter and I used to sit and watch the building work, as the tower went up and up. Just recently this block has been demolished. I never thought I’d live to see them knocked down, as well as built!
