Pocket Money

Sweets were wrapped in a square of newspaper which was rolled into a funnel.

My father was a policeman. We used to get a penny one week and a halfpenny the next week cause my father got paid fortnightly. Of course, you could buy bags of sweets for a penny, all sorts of things.

We used to stand with our noses against the window and decide what we could spend it on. There were aniseed balls, love hearts, dolly mixtures, lucky bags – you would get a little bit of everything for a halfpenny, you could get one for a penny also. Sweets were wrapped in a square of newspaper which was rolled into a funnel.
