I was getting married that year, so I wasn’t really bothered about the war!
I was still working before I got married and we went to Saltwell Park. The police took two vans there and they were training you how to go through a gas chamber. We just walked through. I was getting married that year, so I wasn’t really bothered about the war!
When the war finished peace parties were held on school fields. I lived beside Chester Place School where there was a little green. The reserves would stand on the gate and watch for people. I remember my mother making jellies in big glass dishes and all that sort of stuff. I remember someone giving me a Union Jack when the war was over to celebrate.
