Paste Eggs and Rationing

How special was a paste egg!

You need to remember that, for many of us who grew up during the war and shortly after, Easter was a time when rationing still ruled everything we did.  There just wasn’t the chance to get hold of chocolate eggs – they were beyond the limit for the ration coupons and other things took priority over chocolate.

Even paste eggs were very special, because of the shortages.  We were always hungry and we made sure our paste eggs got eaten!  Instead, our families concentrated on giving us as good an Easter tea as they could, and then making sure there were lots of games and things to do when we had some time away from school and work.
