Empire Day

We used to sing a little ditty.....

From the fields we used to pick a bunch of daisies to wear on Empire Day.  We used to stand in our lines in the Addison Potter school yard and sing; Land of Hope and Glory; Land of Our Fathers (Welsh); Oh Beautiful our Country; ending with the National Anthem.  The Union Jack was up the flagpole and we filed singly past and saluted the flag.  Always we were granted the afternoon off as a half-holiday.  We used to sing a little ditty which went like this:-

‘The 24th May
The Queen’s Birthday
If you don’t give us a holiday
We’ll all run away’
