Christmas on National Service – Egypt 1954

The officers served the turkey dinner to the men.

Christmas was just the same as being at home really, except the weather was very hot, even though it was winter. It was a bit different because you were in a camp with all men, same as yourself, rather than at home with family but we all mucked in. We had a few beers, a few pressies and a turkey dinner. The thing that was different about the turkey dinner was that the officers served it to the men. You sat down and they came round and served you. “Would you like this, would you like that?” And then they served you the whole meal. Mind, it was the only time the officers ever did anything!
