Betty D’s Memories of Wallsend

Can you imagine what our teachers had to put up with.

Editor’s Note: Betty D was born in Willington Quay in 1930 and took part in the Hand in Hand Reminiscence project in 2008

I was one half of a set of twins and when we started school at St Aidan’s Primary in Holy Cross we hit the headlines.  We weren’t the only set of twins to start – there were three other sets too!  Can you imagine what our teachers had to put up with.

I remember that I never had any shop-bought clothes until I was sixteen years old.  My mother made everything for us until then.  She made our First Holy Communion dresses.  Mine was white satin with a yoke and a pocket with a frill.  I remember dropping orange trifle on it at the Communion Breakfast afterwards.  I think I’ve even still got the head-dress that I wore with it.
