The Pearey House Centre in Preston Park, North Shields, opened in 1950, but has its origins back in 1873 when the Northumberland and Durham Home Teaching Society was set up. There have been a number of changes over the years in the services it offers and the areas it serves, but the charity has moved with the times to provide a service that is still relevant to people living with visual impairment in the 21st century.
In 1973, the organisation celebrated it’s centenary with a commemorative book and Remembering the Past has had the honour of working with the current management team to produce a new book in 2023 that celebrated another 50 years in the life of the charity. To do this, we interviewed service users and residents as well as both current and former staff and trustees. Their contributions were used to tell the story of the past 50 years and the plans and hopes for the future.
We are now able to feature these contributions on our website and we hope you will enjoy reading or listening to these stories on our Pearey House 150th Anniversary project page.
